A Wiki as defined by wikipedia an online Wiki encyclopaedia is "...a web application that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content."

A Wiki brings the idea of open source and freedom of speech to a new level.
Anyone can edit or alter the content on this site, this means that if you see something you don't agree with or think could be worded better you can change it.
The main benefit is that the site can benefit from everybody’s knowledge and experience, the site grows with every contribution.
If you know something about a particular topic or would like to contribute an article please feel free to do so.

With this type of open site you might be asking your self couldn't someone just delete everything?. Yes they could, to help prevent this the website site stores a history of all changes, this means that the pages can with the click of a button be rolled back to a previous version.

There are also various other potential problems, mis-information, that is where false details are placed within a page, this is potentially a very bad situation, that is why if you see some information that you know is wrong you can correct it and if you aren't sure you can put a comment on the page saying you think it is wrong, then if someone agrees with you they can make the change.

Spam
Recently there has been an increase in what is known as comment spam, this is where spammers place small comments on forums and other comment systems with text like "i agree, for more information see www.spamsite.com" or "very good point, you might find this site interesting www.spamsite.com". The aim of this type of spam is to increase the number of links that point to there site and hence increase there website rank in the major search engines. Thankfully a little while ago the major search engines agreed on a solution to this, what they cam up with was the nofollow attribute. This attribute is automatically added to all external links, this means that if you do place an external link search engines won’t follow it and the spammer won't benefit from the link.
